LAUDERHILL, FL — Canada fell short against Oman in a rain-affected ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 clash on Friday, losing by 18 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method after severe weather brought an early halt to play.
The match, hosted at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, saw Canada win the toss and choose to bat first. Captain and opener Navneet Dhaliwal led the charge with a composed 73 off 120 balls, including five boundaries and a six. Middle-order batter Mansab Gill added a crucial 59, but the team crumbled late, losing three wickets for just one run to finish 212 all out in 48.4 overs.
Oman’s chase started solidly, reaching 108 for 3 in the 24th over before the rain swept in. With no further play possible, Oman was declared the winner under DLS calculations. Hammad Mirza was Oman’s top scorer with 31, while Jatinder Singh and Mujibur Ali contributed 27 and 23 not out respectively.
This marks Oman’s second victory over Canada in the series — the first being a 15-run win earlier in the week. It’s also another tough result for Canada, following a heavy 169-run defeat to the U.S. last Saturday.
The League 2 tournament, part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, features eight nations — Canada, Oman, U.S., Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Scotland, and UAE — each playing 36 ODIs across nine tri-series until December 2026.
The top four teams will secure spots in the global 10-team World Cup Qualifier. As it stands, the Netherlands lead the pack with 26 points, followed closely by the U.S. and Oman (24 points each). Canada, with a record of 9 wins, 8 losses, and 2 no-results, sits fifth with 20 points — tied with Scotland but trailing on net run rate.
Currently ranked 18th in the ICC ODI standings, Canada faces another high-stakes showdown this Sunday — a rematch against arch-rivals, the 15th-ranked United States.
The road to 2027 remains long, but every run and rain delay counts.
