Race Begins: Nominations Open for Ontario’s 2026 Municipal Elections

The road to local leadership officially begins today as nominations open across Ontario for candidates seeking to run in this fall’s municipal elections.

From mayoral races to city council seats and school board trustee positions, hopeful candidates now have until August 21 to submit their nomination papers through their respective municipal clerk offices. The process requires candidates to complete official documentation, pay the prescribed nomination fee, and gather at least 25 endorsement signatures—an initial test of community support before the real campaign begins.

Alongside candidates, individuals, corporations, and trade unions can also step into the political arena as third-party advertisers. Registration for these groups opens today and will remain available until October 23, allowing them to support or oppose candidates through advertising and outreach efforts during the campaign period.

The elections, scheduled for October 26, will determine leadership at the local level across Ontario—decisions that directly impact communities on issues ranging from housing and infrastructure to public safety and local services.

Eligibility to vote extends beyond just residency. Ontarians can cast a ballot in a municipality if they live there, own or rent property, or are the spouse of a property owner or tenant in that municipality, even if they reside elsewhere.

With the nomination window now open, the coming weeks are expected to see a surge of announcements, alliances, and early campaigning, setting the stage for what could be a highly competitive and closely watched municipal election season across the province.
