Quebec RCMP Officer Charged in Alleged Cross-Border Smuggling of Family Member

A Quebec-based RCMP officer is facing criminal charges after allegedly helping a family member enter Canada illegally through an unguarded border crossing, raising serious concerns about public trust and integrity within law enforcement.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced that 36-year-old Aaron Baringue of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, has been charged with breach of trust and obstruction in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred in September 2024. He is scheduled to appear before the court on July 20.

According to investigators, Baringue, while off duty, allegedly travelled to the United States to meet a family member who had previously been denied entry into Canada. Authorities allege that he then transported the individual to an unguarded section of the Canada–United States border near Saint-Armand, Quebec, where the person crossed into Canada unlawfully.

The situation came to light after U.S. border officials detected and reported the unauthorized crossing. RCMP officials say Baringue informed his supervisor about the incident the following day, prompting an internal investigation.

Shortly thereafter, the officer was arrested and suspended from duty. He has remained suspended while the investigation proceeded.

Police say the family member involved was eventually turned over to the Canada Border Services Agency for further action. Officials have not publicly disclosed the individual’s identity or immigration status.

The investigation was conducted by the RCMP’s Special Investigations Unit with assistance from the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Authorities emphasized that the case was handled with the same level of scrutiny and impartiality as any other criminal investigation, despite the accused being a serving police officer.

RCMP representatives described the investigation as thorough and comprehensive, stressing that no special treatment was afforded to the accused because of his position within the force.

Baringue had served as a patrol officer with the Champlain Integrated Border Enforcement Team since joining the RCMP in 2019. The specialized unit works closely with Canadian and American law enforcement agencies to combat cross-border crime, including illegal migration, smuggling, and organized criminal activity.

The case has drawn significant attention because of the nature of the allegations and the officer’s role in border enforcement. If convicted, the charges could carry serious legal and professional consequences.

The matter will now proceed through the courts, where the allegations remain unproven until tested and decided in accordance with Canadian law.
