A highly rated Brampton restaurant has received a conditional pass from Peel Public Health after inspectors uncovered a series of food safety violations earlier this month.
Malai, located at 4525 Ebenezer Rd., Units 25–28, was inspected on October 2. Despite boasting an impressive 4.8-star Google rating based on nearly 2,000 reviews, the restaurant was cited for multiple infractions, including several critical risk issues.
Inspection results showed the restaurant failed to:
- Store food to prevent contamination or adulteration (significant risk)
- Provide adequate and accessible handwashing stations with proper supplies
- Ensure food handlers washed their hands to prevent contamination (critical risk)
- Provide sanitizer testing reagents and properly wash and sanitize utensils
- Maintain nonfood contact surfaces and mechanical ventilation systems
- Implement proper pest control measures and keep records
- Have a certified food handler/supervisor on-site at all times
The restaurant also lacked a properly maintained or approved commercial dishwasher.
Following the inspection, the establishment was issued a yellow conditional pass, indicating that “items posing a risk of illness must be corrected at the time of inspection.” A reinspection on October 3 confirmed that violations had been addressed, resulting in a pass.
Peel Public Health uses a green-yellow-red system to inform the public of inspection results. A green pass indicates full compliance with health regulations, while yellow signals issues that must be immediately corrected. A red closure sign is issued if inspectors identify a serious health hazard requiring the business to shut down until resolved.
