PM Trudeau Pays Tribute to Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh Following His Passing

Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics and economics, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. Known for his transformative contributions to India’s economy and diplomacy, Dr. Singh leaves behind a legacy of progress and humility that has deeply influenced the nation and the world.

In a heartfelt tribute, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences, emphasizing Dr. Singh’s pivotal role in India’s development and his efforts to strengthen global relationships, including with Canada. Trudeau tweeted:
“Manmohan Singh’s passing is a loss for India and the world. As one of its longest-serving leaders, he transformed the country’s economy, lifted millions out of poverty, and built strong bridges with the world — including Canada.”

Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, becoming the first Sikh to hold the position. Renowned for his calm demeanor and intellectual brilliance, he was often hailed as the “father of India’s economic reforms.” As Finance Minister in 1991, Singh played a critical role in liberalizing the Indian economy, opening it to foreign investment and modernizing its financial infrastructure. This monumental shift spurred decades of economic growth, lifting millions out of poverty.

During his decade-long tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh championed inclusive development through key initiatives such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information Act, which empowered millions, especially in rural India.

Internationally, Dr. Singh elevated India’s status on the global stage. His leadership forged stronger economic and strategic ties with nations like the United States, Japan, and Canada. Under his stewardship, India and Canada signed several agreements to enhance cooperation in trade, education, and nuclear energy.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage, describing Singh as “a beacon of wisdom and service” who guided India through transformative times. Global leaders from various nations echoed similar sentiments, underscoring Dr. Singh’s role in shaping modern India’s identity.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s most respected leaders. An alumnus of Cambridge and Oxford, he combined academic brilliance with a deep commitment to public service.

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. The Indian government has declared a state funeral, with national flags flying at half-mast in his honor.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s passing marks a profound loss for India and the global community. As tributes pour in from around the world, his life and legacy stand as a testament to the power of integrity, vision, and service in leadership.
