Peel Region Launches Battery Pickup Drive to Keep Hazardous Waste Out of Landfills

The Region of Peel is once again stepping up its environmental protection efforts with a curbside battery collection program starting October 20, encouraging residents to safely dispose of used batteries instead of tossing them in the trash.

Officials are reminding residents that batteries should never be placed in garbage, recycling, or organics bins, as doing so can cause dangerous fires in collection trucks and waste facilities, putting both workers and property at risk.

“Properly disposing of batteries helps protect the environment and our community by keeping hazardous materials out of landfills,” the region said in a news release.

The Region of Peel’s ongoing collection efforts have already diverted more than 255,000 kilograms of used batteries from landfills — a major achievement that underscores the community’s growing commitment to environmental sustainability.

Residents can prepare for the upcoming collection by sealing their used batteries in a transparent bag, taping the ends of rechargeable and 9-volt batteries, and placing the bag on top of their closed green bin on the scheduled pickup day. If a household doesn’t have a green bin, the battery bag can be placed beside recycling bags instead.

Those who miss their collection day can still dispose of batteries responsibly by visiting recycleyourbatteries.ca to locate free drop-off sites, or by taking them directly to any Community Recycling Centre across Peel Region.

Through these efforts, Peel Region continues to promote safe waste management and environmental responsibility — one battery at a time.
