MISSISSAUGA — Peel Regional Police recorded 418 assault-related incidents in Mississauga and Brampton between September 11 and October 11, shedding light on a troubling surge in violent crime across the region.
According to police data, 147 incidents occurred in Mississauga, 170 in Brampton, and one in Toronto that fell under Peel’s jurisdiction. This translates to more than 10 assaults reported every single day, underlining the persistent public safety challenges in Peel Region.
The data map highlights Dixie Road and Kennedy Road as the top two assault hotspots, with eight incidents each over the month-long period. However, police did not provide a breakdown of the specific types of assaults or details on victim injuries.
Of the total reported assaults, investigators have solved 355 cases, while 62 remain under active investigation and 52 are still unsolved.
Several high-profile incidents punctuated the past month’s statistics, including multiple sexual assault cases in Mississauga, the arrest of a Mississauga man by U.S. Marshals in a 2021 assault case, and an alleged sexual assault involving a rideshare passenger traveling from Mississauga to Toronto.
Police are urging residents to take basic safety precautions to reduce their risk, such as avoiding poorly lit areas and unfamiliar shortcuts, speaking through locked doors to strangers, and heading to police stations or open service stations if being followed.
They also emphasize not resisting if someone attempts to grab a bag or purse, and instead immediately seeking a safe location and calling police.
The persistent number of assault incidents continues to keep Peel police and communities on alert, reinforcing the need for both vigilant policing and public awareness.
