Ottawa Implements Extra Security Checks for Flights to India Amid Rising Tensions

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between Canada and India, the Canadian government has implemented enhanced security screening measures for passengers traveling to India. Transport Minister Anita Anand announced that these temporary measures are being taken “out of an abundance of caution” and may result in screening delays at airports.

Travelers are advised to arrive at the airport four hours prior to departure to accommodate the additional screening procedures. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is overseeing these measures, which include hand swabs, X-ray inspections of luggage, and thorough passenger screenings.

These actions follow heightened diplomatic strains between Ottawa and New Delhi, particularly after the 2023 murder of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has alleged Indian government involvement in the killing, a claim that India has denied. Subsequent developments have included mutual expulsions of diplomats and increased scrutiny of consular activities.

In response to these tensions, the Canadian government has issued travel advisories for those heading to India, urging travelers to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to potential threats, including terrorist attacks and health concerns like the Zika virus.

Passengers planning to travel to India are encouraged to stay informed about the latest security protocols and advisories to ensure a smooth journey.
