A recent Leger poll reveals significant public support for government intervention in high-profile labour disputes at Canadian ports and Canada Post. With disruptions affecting vital services, Canadians appear divided on balancing workers’ rights with the country’s economic and logistical needs.
Public Support for Intervention in Labour Disputes
The poll shows that 63% of Canadians back the Liberal government’s decision to involve the Canada Industrial Relations Board in ending the port dispute and moving negotiations to binding arbitration. Meanwhile, 57% support similar government intervention in the ongoing strike at Canada Post, where 55,000 postal workers have halted operations since last Friday.
Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon, while ruling out immediate action in the Canada Post strike, had earlier intervened to end port lockouts in British Columbia and Montreal that had frozen cargo container movements.
Canadians’ Views on Essential Services and Union Demands
Over half (51%) of respondents believe port operations should be classified as essential services, preventing future work stoppages, while 32% maintain that workers should retain the right to strike.
On the Canada Post front, 56% expressed support for postal workers’ demands, which include a 24% wage hike over four years, improved job security, and enhanced benefits. Canada Post, meanwhile, has countered with an 11.5% wage increase, sparking concerns over potential mail delays during the holiday season.
Awareness and Concerns
Canadians are more familiar with the postal strike than the port lockouts, with 86% aware of the Canada Post dispute compared to 67% familiar with the port labour conflict. Concerns over disruptions are high, with 61% worried about mail delays and 57% expressing unease about potential holiday season impacts.
Union Resistance and Legal Challenges
Unions representing port workers in Montreal and B.C. have vowed to challenge the government’s intervention in court, arguing that it undermines collective bargaining rights.
What’s Next?
The federal government has appointed a top mediator to resolve the Canada Post strike, but no immediate solutions have been announced. As negotiations continue, Canadians remain concerned about essential services and the broader implications of government intervention in labour disputes.
This poll surveyed 1,529 Canadians online between November 15 and 17, 2024. Though online polls lack a margin of error, the results underscore a growing demand for stability in Canada’s essential services.
