From May 6th to May 12th, the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) proudly celebrates National Nursing Week, acknowledging the dedication, expertise, and vital achievements of registered nurses (RNs), registered practical nurses (RPNs), and nurse practitioners (NPs) under the theme, “We are not an option. We are a necessity. / Nous ne sommes pas une option. Nous sommes une nécessité.”
During this week, ONA highlights the critical role that nurses hold within our healthcare system and emphasizes the pressing need for sustained efforts in recruiting and retaining these highly skilled professionals.
Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, stated, “Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. This week, we celebrate their relentless commitment and advocate for the resources they rightly deserve. It’s not just about recognition; it’s about taking concrete steps to ensure they can work in the best conditions possible.”
Premier Doug Ford expressed, “Our government recognizes the critical challenges facing the nursing profession and is committed to supporting the recruitment and retention of these essential healthcare warriors. Nurses are not just an option; they are a necessity in our thriving Ontario.”
Mayor Patrick Brown of Brampton remarked, “Nurses provide the highest quality care under challenging circumstances. As we celebrate Nursing Week, let’s also reinforce our commitment to supporting their well-being and professional development.”
Kamal Khera, Minister and herself a registered nurse, shared, “As someone who has walked in the shoes of a nurse, I understand the trials and triumphs of the profession. Nurses deserve our utmost respect and support for their professional and compassionate service. They truly are a necessity, and our efforts should reflect that every day, not just during Nursing Week.”
Indigenous Nurses Day – May 6
The celebration also includes Indigenous Nurses Day on May 6, which highlights the contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis nurses. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and supporting the unique experiences and challenges faced by Indigenous nurses in improving the health outcomes of Canadians.
