Ontario Legislature Elects Donna Skelly as First Female Speaker

In a historic move, the Ontario Legislative Assembly has elected MPP Donna Skelly as the province’s first female Speaker. Skelly, representing Flamborough–Glanbrook, was chosen through a secret ballot on April 14, 2025, marking a significant milestone in Ontario’s political history.

Expressing her gratitude, Speaker Skelly stated, “It’s a proud moment. I’m very honoured to be elected. I know a lot of people put their faith in me to help them through the next four years. But to be the first woman is incredible. It’s very, very special.” ​

Charmaine Williams, MPP for Brampton Centre and Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, congratulated Speaker Skelly, saying, “As Ontario’s first woman Speaker, your leadership is breaking new ground and inspiring future generations. You play a crucial role in upholding fairness and ensuring every voice is heard in our legislature. Your historic achievement is a testament to your dedication and commitment to our democracy.” ​

Amarjot Sandhu, MPP for Brampton West, also extended his congratulations: “Congratulations to Speaker Skelly on this historic achievement. Your dedication and leadership are truly commendable, and I look forward to your continued contributions to our province’s governance.”​

Speaker Skelly brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Before entering politics, she had a distinguished career in journalism with CHCH-TV in Hamilton. She served as a Hamilton City Councillor from 2016 to 2018 and was elected as MPP for Flamborough–Glanbrook in 2018. Her tenure includes roles as Deputy Speaker and Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministers of Economic Development and the Attorney General. ​

As Speaker, Skelly will preside over legislative debates, ensuring order and impartiality in the House. Her election reflects Ontario’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in its political institutions.
