Ontario Braces for Extreme Heat: Temperatures to Feel Like 40°C

Southern Ontario is preparing for an intense heat event today, with temperatures expected to feel like nearly 40°C. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning as daytime highs are anticipated to reach 31°C, accompanied by humidex values between 35 and 39°C. The heat will persist throughout the night, with temperatures remaining above 20°C, offering little relief.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has indicated that a cooler airmass is expected to arrive by Tuesday night. However, daytime temperatures will still peak at 31°C. Additionally, there is a 30% chance of afternoon showers, with a risk of thunderstorms on Tuesday.

The public is urged to take precautions during this heat event. The health risks are particularly elevated for older adults, infants, young children, pregnant individuals, people with physical or mental illnesses, and those with disabilities or mobility issues.

Staying hydrated is crucial. Residents are advised to drink plenty of water regularly, even before feeling thirsty, as thirst is not a reliable indicator of dehydration. It is important to be aware of the symptoms of heat illness, which include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and the worsening of existing health conditions.

Environment and Climate Change Canada also warns against leaving people, especially children, or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can quickly rise to dangerous levels.

As the region anticipates these high temperatures, it is essential for everyone to remain vigilant and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. For further updates and information, residents are encouraged to visit the Environment and Climate Change Canada website.
