Oh Baby! All Mississauga Child Births Now Moving to Credit Valley Hospital

MISSISSAUGA — Big changes have arrived for new parents in Mississauga. Starting today, Credit Valley Hospital will be the city’s sole site for maternity and inpatient women’s and children’s services, as Trillium Health Partners begins the massive redevelopment of Mississauga Hospital on the Queensway.

The shift means that all deliveries, maternal care, and inpatient pediatric services have now been consolidated at Credit Valley Hospital, located at Erin Mills Parkway and Eglinton Avenue West. Trillium Health Partners, which oversees both Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley as well as Queensway Health Centre in Etobicoke, says the move is designed to improve efficiency, consistency, and capacity.

“We are bringing these services together at Credit Valley Hospital to create a more organized and streamlined care model for our patients and employees,” Trillium said in a statement. “This change will also provide a consistent patient experience and more effectively manage the increasing demand in our community.”

Credit Valley Hospital has undergone significant renovations to support the transition, which officially took effect October 8. For many long-time Mississauga residents, this marks the end of an era — Mississauga Hospital, which opened in 1958, was where generations were born. Credit Valley joined the maternity scene in 1985, and the two hospitals have shared delivery duties ever since.

Together, Trillium hospitals oversee around 8,000 births annually, one of the highest volumes in the country. With Peel Region’s population growing rapidly, that number is expected to climb toward 10,000 births a year in the near future.

The change is part of a long-term plan to transform Mississauga Hospital into one of Canada’s largest healthcare facilities. Over the next decade, the site will be rebuilt and expanded, including the construction of the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, which will eventually bring birthing services back to the Queensway campus.

Emergency care will continue uninterrupted at both Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals during the construction period. “If you visit the Mississauga Hospital Emergency Department and need specialized care from an obstetrician/gynecologist or pediatrician located at Credit Valley Hospital, our medical teams will ensure a safe transfer,” Trillium said.

While inpatient maternity services have moved, some pediatric outpatient clinics — including the Family Care Centre and Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Services — will remain at or adjacent to Mississauga Hospital.

The consolidation marks the start of a new chapter for hospital care in Mississauga, setting the stage for a major healthcare expansion expected to redefine the region’s medical landscape over the coming decade.
