Oakville shoppers won’t have to wait as long as expected to explore the town’s newest Walmart, as the store’s opening date has been moved up to October 9 — a full week ahead of schedule. The new location, set inside the South Oakville Centre (still affectionately known as Hopedale Mall by longtime locals), is expected to breathe new life into a shopping hub that has seen its share of retail turnover.
The mall, situated at Third Line and Rebecca Street, has hosted many big-name retailers over the decades — from Kmart and Zellers to Target, which closed its doors after a short-lived run in 2015. Its latest tenant, Walmart, is seen as a strong anchor store that could draw shoppers back to the once-bustling centre.
Shoppers can expect a full Walmart Supercentre experience, complete with clothing, furniture, appliances, home goods, groceries, and a pharmacy. The format mirrors the popular Hays Boulevard location in North Oakville, which has become a reliable stop for residents.
Many hope this opening will mark a turning point for the historic mall, which first opened in 1959 as an outdoor plaza before being converted into an enclosed shopping centre in 1971. Retailers like Metro, LCBO, and Gino’s Pizza have helped sustain foot traffic, but the arrival of Walmart is being hailed as a major catalyst for revitalizing the area.
