Poilievre Has No Plan to Stand Up to Trump, Say Liberal Leaders
As Canada faces growing economic uncertainty driven by renewed U.S. tariffs and international trade volatility, Liberal leaders are warning that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has no plan to defend Canadian jobs or economic sovereignty in the face of threats posed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement originally issued by François-Philippe Champagne, Liberal candidate for Saint-Maurice–Champlain, the Liberal Party emphasized the stark contrast between Mark Carney’s forward-looking strategy and Pierre Poilievre’s recycled rhetoric.
Shafqat Ali, Liberal MP for Brampton Centre, sounded the alarm:
“Pierre Poilievre is following Trump’s playbook, not standing up to it. His plan makes our communities less safe and our economy more vulnerable. Canadians deserve leadership that stands firm, not folds under pressure. Mark Carney is that leader.”

Amandeep Sodhi, Liberal candidate for Brampton Centre, added:
“At a time when President Trump is threatening to unravel global trade and put Canadian industry at risk, Canadians deserve a leader who’s ready with a real plan—not tired slogans and chaos. Mark Carney brings the experience, the credibility, and the global respect needed to protect Canadian workers and grow our economy.”
Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, and MP for Brampton West, emphasized the stakes:
“This election is about protecting our future. Pierre Poilievre is gambling with it. We need Mark Carney’s leadership to stand up for working families, safeguard our economy, and protect the progress we’ve made.”
Sonia Sidhu, MP for Brampton South, echoed the concern:
“When global uncertainty rises, strong leadership matters most. Mark Carney understands the global economy, and he has a real plan for Canada. Pierre Poilievre has soundbites, not solutions.”
Poilievre’s newly released platform has drawn criticism for failing to outline a coherent strategy to counter Trump’s aggressive trade agenda, instead offering deep cuts to health care, child care, and housing investments, while pushing to weaken gun control and defund critical programs.
Liberal Leader Mark Carney has pledged to take a bold stand against Trump’s tariffs, safeguard Canada’s global competitiveness, and make strategic investments in families, jobs, and national security.
As the election nears, Liberals are urging Canadians to recognize what’s at stake—and to vote for a party with a real plan to lead Canada through global uncertainty.
