OTTAWA – The Commissioner of Canada Elections, Caroline Simard, announced Wednesday that there is no evidence to suggest the April 28th federal election results were affected by foreign interference, disinformation, or voter intimidation. This declaration comes despite a substantial increase in complaints received by her office.
Simard’s preliminary report notes over 16,000 complaints regarding the recent campaign – a seven-fold rise compared to 2019 and 2021. However, many of these were attributed to “amplification,” and the volume of specific complaints about foreign interference and related issues was lower than expected.
“So far, based on our initial observations and the information we have, there is no evidence to suggest that the election outcome was affected in any way,” Simard stated. Her office also clarified that many complaints reflected mistaken beliefs about election laws rather than actual violations.
While 2,330 files have been closed, 16,115 remain under review. The commissioner’s office emphasizes that these initial figures are raw data and subject to change.
