Nepean MP Chandra Arya Enters Liberal Leadership Race with Bold Policy Proposals

Chandra Arya Declares Candidacy for Liberal Party Leadership

Nepean MP Chandra Arya has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, unveiling an ambitious platform that includes scrapping the consumer carbon tax and transitioning Canada into a republic.

Arya, first elected to represent Nepean in 2015, is the first member of the Liberal caucus to formally declare his bid for party leader. In a video posted on social media, Arya positioned himself as a candidate focused on economic reform and government efficiency.

“I’m running to be the next prime minister of Canada to lead a smaller, more efficient government, rebuild our nation, and secure prosperity for future generations,” Arya said.

Platform Highlights

Arya’s platform features several sweeping policy proposals aimed at addressing structural issues in Canada’s economy and governance:

  • Economic Growth: Setting an ambitious target of achieving a $5 trillion GDP within 25 years.
  • Government Efficiency: Reviewing all government programs to ensure relevance and economic impact. Programs deemed unnecessary would be eliminated or restructured.
  • Retirement Age: Increasing the retirement age by two years.
  • Housing Crisis: Guaranteeing orders for over 100,000 prefab homes and adopting advanced construction technologies.
  • Climate Policy: Eliminating “activist-driven policies,” including the consumer carbon pricing mechanism, and focusing on science-based solutions to tackle climate change.
  • Immigration Reform: Limiting immigration to meet economic growth needs, with a focus on skilled trades.
  • National Defense: Prioritizing Canada’s specific security needs in defense investments.
  • Republic Transition: Proposing to make Canada a sovereign republic, removing ties to the monarchy.
  • Foreign Policy: Recognizing the sovereign state of Palestine as part of a two-state solution.

A Call for Bold Decisions

In a letter accompanying his announcement, Arya pledged to make “big and bold decisions” to rebuild Canada’s economy, promising a “razor-sharp focus” on the economic implications of every government decision.

“Every government program and entity will face a simple question: Is it still relevant? If not, it’s gone or will be restructured to deliver economic development,” Arya said.

He also emphasized the importance of engaging scientists, engineers, and industry professionals to craft fact-based policies that drive growth and address climate change.

Challengers and Considerations

Arya joins former Liberal MP Frank Baylis as the only declared candidates in the race to replace outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation earlier this week.

Other potential contenders include Gatineau MP Steve MacKinnon, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, and Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney has also expressed interest in running.

The Liberal Party of Canada has yet to finalize the rules and timeline for the leadership race, but the new leader will be announced on March 9, 2025.

Arya’s bold platform is expected to spark debate within the party, as Liberals weigh his proposals against Canada’s evolving economic and social landscape.

Controversies Surrounding Chandra Arya

Ethics Inquiry (2016)
In 2016, Arya faced an ethics inquiry after political journalist Kady O’Malley reported that he had awarded 26 elementary, middle, and high school students either an Amazon Kindle e-reader or $500 in cash for “perseverance in the face of adversity.” Critics claimed this violated the House of Commons conflict of interest code. Arya defended himself, stating that the awards were funded by the Nepean Liberal Riding Association, not taxpayers.

Email Scandal (2021)
In 2021, Arya apologized after a staffer accidentally emailed private information of 900 constituents to Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) staffers. The CPC instructed their staffers to delete the email, and Arya faced no sanctions due to Canadian privacy laws.

RSS Flag Controversy (2022)
In November 2022, Arya introduced a private member’s bill to declare November as Hindu Heritage Month, which passed unanimously. However, controversy arose when Arya raised a flag on Parliament Hill to celebrate the event. Academics and organizations, including Hindus for Human Rights, claimed the flag symbolized the Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Arya responded that the flag represented the Hindu faith and was not associated with any political organization.

Taxpayer Gift Spending (2023)
In February 2023, Global News reported that Arya spent $21,931 in taxpayer funds on 1,025 plaques as “protocol gifts” for constituents between July 2020 and September 2022. The purchases were made from a single company, SINIX Media Group, which received 53 contracts worth $53,681.50 from Arya’s constituency office. Arya stated the plaques were meant for his constituents but declined to address questions about his relationship with the firm’s CEO.

Liberal Motion Opposition (2024)
In March 2024, Arya emailed fellow MPs urging them to oppose Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal’s motion, M-112, addressing “Political Interference, Violence, or Intimidation on Canadian Soil.” Arya argued the motion could harm Canada-India relations. Dhaliwal defended the motion, emphasizing its aim to protect all Canadians from foreign interference. Despite Arya’s opposition, the motion passed unanimously, with some MPs abstaining.

Kaali Poster Controversy (2024)
Arya condemned filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s movie poster for Kaali, which depicted the Hindu goddess Kali smoking and holding an LGBTQ+ flag. He linked the poster to acts of vandalism against Hindu temples. Manimekalai accused Arya of legitimizing threats against her. In response, over 100 academics, activists, and community organizations criticized Arya’s remarks in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

These controversies highlight the challenges and criticisms Arya has faced during his political career.
