WINNIPEG — The race to lead Canada’s New Democratic Party enters its final stage today, as leadership candidates deliver their closing pitches to party members at a national convention in Winnipeg.
Five candidates are vying to become the next leader of the New Democratic Party, with each expected to outline their vision and priorities in front of delegates before voting concludes later today.
Although an in-person voting booth is available at the convention, ballots have been open for weeks, and a significant portion of the party’s approximately 100,000 members have already cast their votes.
The leadership decision will be determined through a ranked ballot system, where candidates must secure more than 50 per cent of support to win. If no candidate reaches that threshold on the first count, lower-ranked candidates are eliminated and their votes redistributed until a winner emerges.
The next NDP leader is set to be announced on Sunday, marking the conclusion of a six-month campaign that has seen candidates travel across the country to engage members and build support.
High-profile figures are also participating in the convention, including Wab Kinew, who opened the gathering, and Marit Stiles, who is scheduled to address members today.
The outcome of the leadership race is expected to shape the party’s direction heading into future federal elections, as the NDP looks to strengthen its position nationally and reconnect with voters across key regions.
With the final pitches underway, attention now turns to the results — and who will take the helm of one of Canada’s major political parties.
