Montreal Man Charged After $25,000 Jewelry Fraud Using Stolen Credit Cards in Mississauga

A Montreal man is facing multiple fraud-related charges after allegedly orchestrating a scheme that saw stolen credit cards used to purchase approximately $25,000 worth of jewelry in Mississauga.

According to Toronto Police Service, the investigation began after two victims in Toronto were deceived by a suspect posing as a bank employee. In both incidents, which occurred in early October 2025, the victims received phone calls claiming their credit cards had been compromised.

The suspect allegedly convinced the victims to hand over their cards by arranging for a courier to collect them directly from their homes. Once obtained, the stolen credit cards were reportedly used at jewelry stores in Mississauga to make high-value purchases.

Police say approximately $11,000 in jewelry was purchased following the first incident on October 1, while an additional $14,000 worth of items was bought after a second fraudulent call on October 3.

Authorities have since arrested Abdel Madjid Benmaou, 20, of Montreal, in connection with the case. He faces a range of charges, including fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, unauthorized use of credit card data, and false pretences.

The accused is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on April 23, 2026.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Police have also reminded the public that financial institutions do not send couriers to collect credit cards and are advising residents to remain cautious of unsolicited calls requesting sensitive financial information.

The case highlights the growing sophistication of fraud schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals and underscores the importance of public awareness in preventing financial crimes.
