Low-income residents in Brampton and Caledon will soon benefit from more affordable public transit, as the Affordable Transit Program (ATP) expands to include a 50 per cent subsidy on single PRESTO fares starting April 1, 2026.
The initiative, delivered through a partnership between Peel Region, the City of Brampton, the Town of Caledon and the City of Mississauga, aims to reduce financial barriers and improve access to essential services such as employment, education and healthcare.
Under the expanded program, eligible residents will receive a 50 per cent discount on single fares when using Brampton Transit with a PRESTO card. The reduced fares will be $1.78 for adults, $1.48 for youth, and $0.93 for seniors in Caledon. The program will also continue to offer subsidies on adult monthly PRESTO passes.
For the first time, Caledon residents travelling on Brampton Transit buses will be included in the program, significantly broadening its reach and ensuring more residents across the region can benefit from affordable transportation options.
Eligibility for the program is based on income thresholds aligned with the Low-Income Measure. Residents of Brampton and Caledon can apply through Peel Region by submitting their most recent Notice of Assessment along with a registered PRESTO card.
Local leaders welcomed the expansion, highlighting its importance in building inclusive and connected communities. Patrick Brown emphasized that affordable transit plays a vital role in connecting residents to opportunities and essential services, while Paul Vicente noted that the program will help remove financial barriers for those who rely on transit daily. Annette Groves added that the initiative will make a meaningful difference for families and individuals across Caledon by improving access to reliable transportation.
As transit costs continue to impact household budgets, the expansion of the Affordable Transit Program represents a significant step toward greater affordability and accessibility for residents across Peel Region.
