Mississauga’s New Multibillion-Dollar Hospital Set to Become Canada’s Largest by 2033

Mississauga is set to welcome the largest hospital in Canada by 2033 with the construction of the new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, a multibillion-dollar project poised to transform healthcare in the city and surrounding regions. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, following the conclusion of preliminary work at the Hurontario Street and The Queensway site early next year.

The state-of-the-art hospital will feature nearly 1,000 beds, significantly enhancing Mississauga’s healthcare infrastructure. Trillium Health Partners (THP) President and CEO Karli Farrow described the project as a “destination health centre,” offering cutting-edge, specialized care and digital integration with community health hubs.

Though the exact cost remains unspecified, it is expected to be in the billions, with the Ontario government funding 80-85% of the project. The remainder will come from THP’s revenue, philanthropy, and the City of Mississauga, which has been asked to contribute around $450 million by 2033.

Economic Impact and Workforce Growth

In addition to transforming healthcare, the project is projected to boost the local economy by $1 billion over 10 years. The hospital will also expand Mississauga’s healthcare workforce, creating 2,400 new positions for healthcare professionals and over 400 doctors.

At the peak of construction, an estimated 3,000 workers will be on site, building the 22-storey hospital that will be triple the size of the current facility, which has served Mississauga since 1958.

Key Features and Services

The new hospital will include:

  • Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children (200,000 square feet)
  • 23 state-of-the-art operating rooms (up from the current 14)
  • A new emergency department that will be three times larger than the existing ER and one of the largest in Ontario
  • Over 950 patient beds, an increase of about 350 beds compared to the current facility

The hospital will also feature expanded neonatal intensive care and specialized zones for pediatric emergency care, addressing the growing demand for dedicated children’s healthcare services.

City’s Role and Funding Considerations

While the hospital will serve as a regional hub for healthcare, Ward 6 Councillor Joe Horneck emphasized the need for Mississauga to secure a fair deal regarding its financial contribution. He noted that since the facility will serve residents beyond Mississauga, the city’s taxpayers should not bear the full burden of the cost.

Mississauga city council will finalize its financial contribution by January 2025 to ensure construction begins on time.

A Game Changer for Mississauga’s Healthcare

When completed, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will not only be the largest in Canada but will also provide shorter wait times, greater access to specialized care, and improved healthcare outcomes for residents of Mississauga and surrounding areas.
