Two Mississauga schools are squaring off against Canada’s best in Samsung Canada’s Solve for Tomorrow STEM showdown, with a $50,000 tech jackpot on the line for solving community challenges.
At Allan A. Martin Senior Public School, Grade 7 stars Micheal Chen and Arjun Sharma wowed with their aqueous magnesium battery idea—a greener twist on lithium power. “They researched, wrote, and soared,” said teacher Manisha Kumar, who spurred them on. The finalist nod netted $2,500 in Samsung swag, and now they’re prepping a video with mentor guidance. “They’re loving every second,” Kumar grinned.
Port Credit Secondary School’s team fired back with heat-absorbing bricks to slash HVAC use through clever energy storage. They’re joined by four Halton contenders—Aldershot, Bishop Reding, Elsie MacGill, and Thomas A. Blakelock—plus Parry Sound’s École Publique aux Quatre Vents, in a 12-team final. Allan A. Martin shines as a rare middle school survivor.
From food-saving apps to shark-safe nets, the ideas dazzle. One champ will claim the $50,000 Samsung prize.
