Mississauga and Brampton Students Win $220K in Schulich Scholarships for STEM Excellence

Two exceptional high school students from Mississauga and Brampton have been awarded a total of $220,000 through the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarships program, setting them on a strong path toward their post-secondary education in engineering.

The scholarships, among Canada’s most competitive and generous undergraduate awards, are part of an annual program that distributes 50 engineering scholarships worth $120,000 each, and 50 science, technology, or math scholarships valued at $100,000 each. Candidates are selected based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership, and financial need, with each Canadian high school eligible to nominate one student per year.

This year, Brampton Centennial Secondary School student Yash Sharma was awarded a $120,000 engineering scholarship. Sharma will begin his studies at Western University this fall and described the award as a testament to his resilience and perseverance—qualities he believes are essential for both students and leaders. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family, friends, and teachers, and shared his ambition to make a lasting impact in his community.

Mississauga’s Sean Zhang, a student at The Woodlands Secondary School, was also selected to receive a $120,000 scholarship for engineering. Both students were recognized by the Peel District School Board for their outstanding achievements.

Funded by Canadian philanthropist Seymour Schulich, the program has awarded more than $100 million since 2012 to help foster a new generation of entrepreneurial and technology-driven innovators. Peel District School Board’s Director of Education, Rashmi Swarup, extended her congratulations to both students, highlighting the scholarships’ role in empowering young leaders and helping them realize their potential.
