Brampton Mayor met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address pressing local issues: rampant auto thefts and the expansion of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system into Downtown Brampton. Mayor Brown commended the Prime Minister for his proactive involvement and reiterated their shared commitment to enhance safety and urban mobility in Canada’s fastest-growing city.
During the meeting, Mayor Brown advocated for the installation of additional container scanners at strategic points in Montreal, Brampton, and Vaughan to bolster efforts against the surge in auto thefts and related crimes in the Greater Toronto Area. He also pushed for granting local police jurisdiction at these critical locations to effectively combat theft rings.
Furthermore, Mayor Brown sought federal support for Phase 2 of the Brampton LRT project, aiming to connect the under-construction line with the Brampton Innovation District GO Station. This extension is expected to significantly improve transit connectivity and spur high-density development around the new stations, potentially adding over 30,000 new housing units.
The discussions were marked by a strong mutual intent to continue collaborating on these vital initiatives, highlighting the importance of federal backing in meeting the needs of Brampton’s rapidly expanding community.
