Mandatory Alcohol Screening Implemented on GTA Highways

In a significant move to curb impaired driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has announced that drivers on Greater Toronto Area (GTA) highways will now be subject to mandatory alcohol screening. This new measure affects motorists traveling on major routes including the QEW, and Highways 403 and 401, spanning from Oshawa to Mississauga, through Oakville to Burlington.

As of Wednesday, May 1, 2024, the OPP will require a breath sample from all drivers stopped for any reason along these highways. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety, as the region has seen a concerning rise in alcohol-related accidents. According to the OPP, incidents of impaired driving collisions and charges have surged by nearly 30% compared to the past five-year average.

The policy allows officers to request a breath sample immediately during traffic stops, regardless of whether there is apparent evidence of drinking and driving. “As impaired driving occurrences continue to increase, we are taking our strongest measures yet to detect, investigate and remove impaired drivers from our roads,” the OPP stated.

Motorists who fail to comply with the breath demand could face criminal charges for failure or refusal under the Criminal Code. The OPP underscores the importance of cooperation during these checks to ensure the safety and well-being of all road users across the GTA.
