Man Seriously Injured After Falling from Gardiner While Fleeing Police Following Carjacking: SIU Investigating

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched a probe after a man fell from the elevated Gardiner Expressway and sustained serious injuries while fleeing Toronto police late Monday night, following an alleged armed carjacking involving luxury vehicles in Don Mills.

According to the SIU, the incident began around 11 p.m. when Toronto police responded to reports of an armed carjacking near the Shops at Don Mills, at Don Mills Road and Lawrence Avenue East. Two high-end vehicles—a Rolls Royce and a BMW—were reportedly stolen in the incident.

Police quickly located the suspect vehicles traveling southbound and began a pursuit. Officers intercepted the BMW on the Don Valley Parkway and set up a roadblock further west on the Gardiner Expressway. As police closed in, one suspect abandoned the BMW and attempted to flee on foot.

The SIU says the man fell from the elevated section of the Gardiner onto Lake Shore Boulevard East near Lower Jarvis Street. Emergency services responded at approximately 11:50 p.m. and transported the man to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A van from the SIU was on scene Tuesday morning as investigators cordoned off the highway and collected evidence. The typically busy stretch of the Gardiner remained shut down during the morning commute as the investigation unfolded.

Toronto police confirmed that the other suspects managed to escape. The total number of individuals involved in the carjacking has not yet been confirmed.

The SIU, which investigates incidents involving police where serious injury, death, or allegations of misconduct may have occurred, is urging anyone with information or video footage of the incident to contact their investigators.
