Internal NDP Memo Warns of Early Federal Election as Soon as March 10

The New Democratic Party (NDP) is warning its candidates and campaign staff to prepare for a potential snap federal election as early as March 10, according to an internal memo obtained by CBC News.

The memo, titled “Election Timing and Planning,” was sent on Wednesday to 140 nominated candidates and their organizing teams by Jennifer Howard, the NDP’s national campaign director.

According to the memo, it is becoming increasingly likely that Mark Carney will be elected as the next Liberal leader on March 9. Howard notes that multiple sources in Ottawa suggest Carney may immediately call an election upon securing the leadership.

“If Mark Carney does win the leadership, we are hearing from many Ottawa sources that he intends on calling an election shortly after becoming Liberal leader,” the memo states.

The NDP memo argues that an election call would come at a time when Parliament is urgently needed to address U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic threats and proposed tariffs, which could have significant repercussions on Canada’s economy.

The document also criticizes the Liberal leadership candidates for failing to consult opposition leaders on emergency legislation that could mitigate the economic impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs.

The memo alleges that the Liberal Party is leveraging the tariff crisis as a strategic political tool, drawing comparisons to tactics used by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

“Taking a page from Doug Ford’s playbook, the Liberals believe that they can turn this crisis into a political benefit for them,” it states.

Despite speculation of an early election, the NDP remains confident in its ability to present a strong progressive alternative. The memo highlights several key campaign issues, including:

  • Cost of living and affordability
  • Timely access to healthcare and doctors
  • Framing both the Liberals and Conservatives as serving corporate interests
  • Tackling climate change while creating jobs
  • Working with Indigenous communities to advance justice and reconciliation

The NDP aims to position itself as the party fighting for working families while portraying Conservatives and Liberals as aligned with the interests of billionaire CEOs.

Despite the NDP’s warnings, Liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland stated that an early election immediately following a new leader’s selection is “not ideal.”

With Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum expected to take effect on March 12, Freeland emphasized the need for a fully functioning government to protect Canada’s economic interests.

“One of the advantages I have is that I am a member of Parliament today, “I was elected four times. So after March 9, I will have the right to stand up in the House of Commons and to represent the government.”

As political parties brace for a potential snap election, the NDP memo signals that Jagmeet Singh’s party is gearing up for an intense campaign. With economic uncertainty looming and Trump’s tariffs posing a serious challenge, all eyes are on the unfolding leadership race and the possibility of Canadians heading to the polls sooner than expected.
