Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Expresses Concern Over Bangladesh Unrest and Attacks on Hindus

On August 15, 2024, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his concerns about the ongoing unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, which has resulted in the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and attacks on the Hindu minority. Speaking from New Delhi’s Red Fort on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, Modi emphasized India’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh in its economic development and expressed hope for a swift return to normalcy in the country.

The unrest in Bangladesh, which began with student-led protests against a government job quota system perceived to favor Hasina’s party affiliates, escalated into widespread violence, leaving over 300 dead. The unrest culminated in Hasina fleeing to India, where she has taken refuge in New Delhi. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has since taken power, with plans to organize fresh elections.

During the violence, many Hindu homes and businesses were attacked, prompting concerns from India about the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. Yunus has since met with Hindu leaders to assure them of protection under the new government.

In his speech, Modi also reiterated India’s dedication to peace and economic growth, with aspirations to become a developed nation by 2047, marking 100 years of independence from British colonial rule.

The situation in Bangladesh is closely watched by India, given the shared history and cultural ties between the two countries, as well as the political and security implications of the ongoing unrest.
