Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Medal Appeal Rejected, IOA Considers Legal Action

In a significant disappointment for India, wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint Olympic silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday. Phogat, who had secured her spot in the final of the women’s 50kg wrestling category after defeating top competitors including Japanese world champion Yui Susaki, was disqualified on the morning of the final due to being 100 grams over the permissible weight limit.

Following the CAS’s decision, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed deep shock and disappointment. IOA President PT Usha voiced concern over the decision, highlighting the significant impact it would have on Phogat’s career and the broader sporting community. The IOA’s statement criticized the strict enforcement of the weight regulation, especially considering the marginal discrepancy involved, and raised questions about the fairness and interpretation of such rules.

The IOA also emphasized the need for more equitable standards that consider the physiological and psychological stresses athletes endure, particularly female athletes. The association is now exploring further legal avenues to contest the decision and continues to advocate for justice and fairness in sports.

The case has sparked a discussion on the need to reassess the rules governing athlete disqualifications and the importance of prioritizing athletes’ well-being. The IOA remains committed to supporting Vinesh Phogat and ensuring her case is heard, while also seeking to uphold the rights and dignity of all athletes .
