The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled an emergency board meeting on November 26, 2024, to resolve the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the 2025 Champions Trophy. The primary focus will be on India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the tournament and the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) insistence on hosting the entire event within its borders.
Key Discussion Points:
- India vs. Pakistan Group Stage Match: With India’s decision not to play in Pakistan, the ICC aims to find a solution that allows the highly anticipated match between the two nations to proceed. Options include relocating this fixture to a neutral venue.
- Tournament Hosting Model: The PCB has so far rejected a hybrid hosting model, which would involve holding some matches outside Pakistan. If the PCB maintains this stance, the ICC may consider moving the entire tournament to an alternative host nation. South Africa has been identified as a potential replacement host.
- Pakistan’s Participation: Reports suggest that if Pakistan loses its hosting rights, it may withdraw from the tournament. The ICC will discuss the implications of such a decision and explore contingency plans to ensure the event’s success.
PCB’s Preparations:
Despite the uncertainties, the PCB is preparing three venues—Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi—to host the tournament. PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi has expressed optimism, stating, “Every other team that has qualified for the Champions Trophy is ready to come. No one has any concern. If India has any concerns, we will talk, and we will ensure that concerns are taken care of.”
Following the meeting, the ICC plans to finalize and announce the full schedule for the Champions Trophy 2025, set to commence on February 19 and conclude on March 9.
