Canadian Citizens to Require Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for UK Visits Starting January 2025

The UK government has announced that, effective January 8, 2025, Canadian citizens will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before visiting or transiting through the United Kingdom. This new requirement is part of the UK’s efforts to enhance border security and streamline the entry process for travelers from countries that currently enjoy visa-free short stays.

Canadian travelers can begin applying for the ETA on November 27, 2024. The authorization, which will cost £10, is valid for two years or until the passport used for the application expires, whichever comes first. Once approved, the ETA permits multiple entries to the UK during its validity period.

The application process is designed to be user-friendly, with travelers encouraged to use the UK ETA app available on the App Store and Google Play. Alternatively, applications can be submitted online via the official UK government website. Most applications are processed within three working days; however, travelers are advised to apply well in advance of their planned departure to account for potential delays.

The ETA is intended for short-term visits to the UK, such as tourism, business trips, or family and friend visits, typically lasting up to six months. It does not allow for work or long-term stays. Importantly, the ETA is linked to the passport used during the application process. Travelers must reapply if they obtain a new passport.

This new travel requirement emphasizes the UK’s commitment to maintaining secure and efficient borders while continuing to welcome millions of visitors annually. Canadian travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new rules to ensure seamless travel experiences.
