ICC Champions Trophy 2025: India’s Squad Announcement Delayed Amid Fitness Concerns

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be announced by February 18 or 19, leaving India and Pakistan as the only two teams yet to finalize their line-ups for the prestigious tournament.

The delay in naming India’s 15-man squad stems primarily from fitness concerns surrounding two key players:

  • Jasprit Bumrah: The star pacer, who sustained an injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has been the subject of speculation regarding his recovery. Dismissing rumors about being on extended “bed rest,” Bumrah called the reports “laughable” and reaffirmed his commitment to returning to the field.
  • Kuldeep Yadav: The wrist spinner has been recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru after an injury sustained during the first home Test against New Zealand. Kuldeep is expected to regain fitness by the end of January, leaving room for optimism about his inclusion in the squad.

While the Champions Trophy squad remains undecided, the BCCI has announced the team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England, starting January 22 in Kolkata.

  • Captain: Suryakumar Yadav
  • Vice-Captain: Axar Patel
  • Key Players: Mohammad Shami, recalled to lead the pace attack, along with promising youngsters and seasoned players.

If reports are accurate, Bumrah may miss the group stage of the Champions Trophy, a significant blow to India’s campaign. However, team management remains confident in their ability to adapt, given India’s depth in talent.

The tournament’s group stage will test India’s mettle as they face fierce competition in one of cricket’s most anticipated global events. The fitness updates of Bumrah and Kuldeep will play a pivotal role in determining the squad composition.

With South Africa and Australia already having announced their squads, the cricketing world eagerly awaits the teams from India and Pakistan. Both nations are known for their passionate cricketing rivalry and are expected to bring formidable line-ups to the tournament.
