Highway Coffee Break Ends in Multiple Fines for Truck and Car Drivers

Truck and Car Drivers Fined After Stopping on Ottawa Highway for a Coffee Break

Two drivers face multiple fines after stopping in a live lane of traffic on Highway 417 in Ottawa for a coffee break on Saturday afternoon, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Shortly after 5 p.m. near Moodie Drive, officers discovered a transport truck partially blocking an on-ramp while a car was parked on the shoulder. The truck’s position forced vehicles to merge onto the highway at higher speeds, creating a serious traffic hazard, police said.

Upon investigation, officers found that the drivers had stopped simply to enjoy a coffee together.

Both drivers received $110 fines and two demerit points for disobeying highway signage. Additionally, they were seen standing on the roadway, leading to further fines:

  • Pedestrian Using Controlled-Access Highway ($50)
  • Standing on Highway & Interfering with Traffic ($25)

A truck inspection revealed further violations, including:
Improperly maintained electronic logs
Invalid registration decal

As a result, the transport truck was temporarily taken out of service, and the trucking company was charged.

The OPP emphasized that highways are not rest stops—while drivers may pull over to the shoulder for emergencies, stopping in an active driving lane is illegal and highly dangerous.

Police urge motorists to use designated rest areas for breaks and remain aware of highway safety rules.
