From Dosa to Bhangra: A Cultural and Wellness Retreat for Flower City Friends Club in Cuba

The Flower City Friends Club (FCFC) seniors embarked on a week-long excursion to the vibrant city of Varadero, Cuba, as part of their “Health Matters” series, designed to promote physical and mental well-being. This exciting 7-night tour, which included travel in elite class and a stay at a luxurious five-star hotel, offered the seniors an unforgettable experience of leisure, health activities, and cultural exploration.

During their stay, the seniors had the unique opportunity to practice yoga under the guidance of a Cuban instructor. The yoga sessions were specially curated to meet the needs of the group, emphasizing flexibility, breathing techniques, and relaxation. The seniors, some of whom were practicing yoga for the first time, felt rejuvenated after the sessions and left with a deeper understanding of how yoga can be incorporated into their daily routines to maintain physical health and mental peace.

In addition to yoga, the seniors learned the art of swimming under expert supervision. Many of them overcame their initial hesitations and embraced swimming as an enjoyable form of exercise. The calm, pristine waters of the resort provided an ideal environment for the seniors to master basic swimming techniques, which will contribute to their long-term fitness and confidence in water-based activities.

Varadero’s beautiful, neat, and clean beaches were the perfect backdrop for both relaxation and learning, with many seniors taking in the scenic beauty and enjoying the resort’s numerous amenities. The hotel’s dining options were equally impressive, with a diverse range of international cuisines from Indian favorites like dosa to Mediterranean and Chinese dishes. The exceptional food quality added to the overall experience, providing comfort and satisfaction for the seniors.

Reflecting on the trip, Gian Paul, Chairperson of the Flower City Friends Club, expressed his gratitude to the members for making the trip a success:
“This trip has been truly memorable thanks to the enthusiasm and energy of all our members. I want to sincerely thank everyone for their participation and for making this experience one that we will all cherish for a long time.”

The tour also featured a full-day guided trip to Havana, the capital city of Cuba, where the group explored historical landmarks and experienced the rich cultural heritage of the country. From colonial-era architecture to the vibrant energy of local markets, the seniors were enthralled by the history and charm of Havana.

Every evening brought a new highlight as Punjabi seniors led cultural programs featuring traditional dances like Gidha and Bhangra. These performances not only entertained the group but also attracted the attention of other guests at the resort, creating a sense of community and unity as people from different cultures joined in, dancing to the infectious beats of Punjabi music. Sukhdarshan Kular, a senior member, shared his excitement:
“The joy of performing Gidha and Bhangra in front of a diverse audience was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s wonderful to see how our culture brings people together across boundaries.”

One of the trip’s brightest stars was Avtar Brar, a 70-year-old member of the club, whose singing and dancing turned the tour into a cultural festival. His energetic performances drew the attention of everyone at the resort, from young to old, men and women, boys and girls. Avtar’s incredible talent brought life to every evening as guests from all over the resort gathered to dance to his tunes. He quickly became the most sought-after member of the club, making him a key highlight of the trip. His presence elevated the experience, and his infectious spirit left a lasting impression on all who witnessed his remarkable performances.

Among the group, Bhupindra Mukar, an 84-year-old first-time visitor to such a destination, was especially moved by the experience:
“This trip has been a revelation for me. I had never imagined myself traveling to a place like this and participating in activities like swimming and yoga. It has given me a new sense of vitality.”

Representing the women members, Narinderjit Manku shared her thoughts on the trip:
“The trip was a perfect blend of fun, fitness, and culture. It was wonderful to see everyone come together and support one another, especially in trying new things like yoga and swimming. It was empowering for all of us women to be part of this journey.”

A special highlight of the tour was the celebration of birthdays for Jaswinder Daind, Surinder Panfer, and Gian Paul, held at the resort’s center stage in front of over 200 guests from various nations. The celebration created a joyous atmosphere and was a memorable moment for both the club members and the international audience.

The trip was such a success that members of the Flower City Friends Club are already eagerly anticipating their next adventure. Energized and inspired by the combination of health, cultural enrichment, and camaraderie, the seniors are looking forward to continuing their wellness journey in new destinations.

This tour was more than just a vacation for the Flower City Friends Club seniors; it was a holistic experience that combined health, culture, and fun, leaving lasting memories and reinforcing the importance of staying active, both physically and mentally, in their golden years.
