Police have made another arrest in the 2021 killing of 65-year-old Giovanni Costa north of Brampton, but one suspect is still at large and wanted nationwide — with a $50,000 reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
The deadly home invasion took place just after midnight on Jan. 18, 2021, when multiple suspects forced their way into Costa’s home on Harvest Moon Drive in Bolton. Costa and his adult son, Michael, were both shot while asleep inside. Giovanni died at the scene, while his son survived.
Ontario Provincial Police announced that a fourth suspect, Elias Akhi, 33, of London, has now been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. A Canada-wide warrant remains in effect for another London man, 48-year-old Waheed Barakziye, wanted on the same charges. Police say he is known to frequent both London and the Greater Toronto Area and warn the public not to approach him.
“Our investigators remain committed to finding answers for the victim’s family and the community,” OPP Det. Insp. Steven Martell said.
Security footage from the night of the murder captured an older black BMW 3-series circling the neighbourhood before two suspects approached the Costa home. Moments later, the same individuals were seen running from the property.
The attack followed another violent incident involving the Costa family: in November 2020, Giovanni’s son Michael was wounded in a shooting outside a Vaughan café. Police have not said whether Giovanni, his son, or both were the intended targets in the Bolton home invasion.
Earlier this month, police announced several more arrests linked to the case. Christopher Brown, 28, of Barrie, was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, discharging a firearm with intent, and possession of firearms contrary to a prohibition order. Neheniah Tirfe, 25, of Toronto, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, while Jordan Andall, 20, of Scarborough, was charged with accessory after the fact to murder.
The OPP continues to appeal for information as they search for Barakziye, urging anyone who sees him to call police immediately.
