Stephen Harper Defends Canada’s Sovereignty in Response to Trump’s Comments
Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper took to social media on Wednesday to indirectly respond to president-elect Donald Trump’s controversial suggestion that the U.S. could use “economic force” to annex Canada as its 51st state. While Harper did not name Trump explicitly, his message was clear, referencing a Conservative Party of Canada video from 13 years ago.
“True when I said it (13 years ago),” Harper posted. “True today.”
In the original video, Harper delivered a passionate defense of Canada’s identity and independence, accompanied by a montage of quintessentially Canadian imagery.
“Canada is, and always has been, our country,” Harper said in the ad. “And we want Canada to be a True North that is as strong and as free as it can be in every way that matters: the best country in the world.”
Harper emphasized the importance of Canada reflecting its values—honor, loyalty, courage, and compassion—while striving to be a beacon of hope and an example for the world.
Canadian Leaders Push Back Against Trump’s Comments
Harper’s post wasn’t the only pushback from Canadian leaders. Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed Trump’s comments as “ridiculous” and urged a focus on more pressing global issues.
“This is a waste of time,” Ford said, suggesting that Canada and the U.S. should collaborate to counter economic threats from China rather than entertain divisive rhetoric.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also addressed the issue during a virtual Council of the Federation meeting, emphasizing the importance of Canada’s trade relationship with the U.S.
“As premiers, we are united and steadfast in our opposition to tariffs, recognizing their varied impacts across provinces,” Smith said. She highlighted Alberta’s strategy to strengthen trade ties, including a recent partnership with Enbridge to expand pipeline capacity.
Smith expressed her intent to advocate for Canada’s interests during her upcoming visit to Washington, D.C., where she will attend the presidential inauguration and related meetings.
Canada’s leaders collectively underscored the importance of maintaining stability and reinforcing the nation’s independence. Harper’s reaffirmation of Canada’s sovereignty echoed sentiments shared across the political spectrum: Canada remains strong, united, and committed to its values amid any external pressures.
