Five Charged After Alleged $2M Theft From Amazon Fulfillment Centre in Ajax

Five people, including two employees of an Amazon fulfillment centre in Ajax, have been charged after police allege roughly $2 million worth of merchandise was stolen over a two-year period.

Durham Regional Police say the investigation began in November after Amazon’s loss prevention team reported suspected internal theft at the facility on Salem Road. Police allege the two employees were involved in the scheme before being arrested.

Following their arrests, officers executed a search warrant at a Scarborough residence, leading to the arrest of three additional suspects. Police seized more than $250,000 in high-end electronics and $50,000 in cash.

Those charged — four from Scarborough and one from Newmarket, aged 28 to 36 — are Janviben Dhameliya, Yash Dhameliya, Mehul Baldevbhai Patem, Ashishkumar Savani and Bansari Savani. All face charges of possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking, while Patem and Ashishkumar Savani also face fraud and theft charges.

The allegations have not been tested in court.
