As a dangerous heat wave grips the Greater Toronto Area, operations at Toronto Pearson International Airport could face delays and disruptions due to extreme weather conditions. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning with temperatures expected to reach 36°C, and a humidex nearing 46°C, pushing safety limits for outdoor workers and ground crews.
The heat wave, which is forecast to continue through Wednesday, poses challenges for airfield operations as airport staff are forced to take additional precautions.
“We’re expecting a sizzling day on the airfield, with humidex values climbing into the mid 40s,” Pearson Airport posted on X. “Severe weather, like today’s heat, can impact the flow on the airfield.”
To ensure safety, ground crews are implementing heat safety protocols, including mandatory rest periods, increased hydration, and restricted time spent working outdoors—all of which could affect the turnaround time for aircraft and baggage handling.
More than 1,000 flights are scheduled at Pearson for Monday, including 206 domestic arrivals and 203 domestic departures, heightening the risk of operational slowdowns during peak travel hours.
Passengers are encouraged to check flight statuses before heading to the airport and stay updated via official airport channels. Pearson’s advisory follows broader warnings from health and safety officials urging residents across Ontario to limit outdoor activity and stay hydrated during the ongoing heat wave.
