Elon Musk Supports Conservative Leader Poilievre, Ridicules Trudeau’s Legacy

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a tech industry titan, has recently turned his attention to Canadian politics, leveraging his massive platform to endorse Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre while mocking outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In the past week, Musk has actively praised Poilievre on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), reposting his tweets and applauding his speeches. At the same time, Musk took aim at Trudeau, referring to him as a “governor” in a jab that echoed President-elect Donald Trump’s rhetoric and even calling him an “insufferable tool.”

Musk’s Canadian Connection

Musk’s interest in Canada may stem from personal ties. Born in South Africa, Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, hails from Saskatchewan, and Musk spent two years at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania.

Beyond personal connections, Musk’s entry into Canadian politics aligns with his broader global strategy. After purchasing Twitter (X) in 2022 and rolling back content moderation policies, Musk has used the platform to amplify his political views, often advocating for libertarian, anti-regulation, and anti-media ideologies.

Musk’s support for Poilievre appears tied to the Conservative leader’s pledge to repeal the Liberal government’s online harms legislation. Critics have described Musk as an “ideological platform mogul” who aligns himself with political movements opposing government regulation and traditional media influence.

During a news conference, Poilievre responded to Musk’s endorsement with humor, saying, “My young son wants to go to Mars. I guess Mr. Musk would be the right guy to put him in touch with.” Poilievre added that Canada would benefit if Musk were to bring Tesla factories or other ventures to the country, creating high-paying jobs

Musk’s foray into Canadian politics is part of a broader pattern of political engagement globally. He played a significant role in Donald Trump’s successful 2024 U.S. presidential campaign, contributing over $200 million and earning a position as the head of Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency.

In Europe, Musk has backed far-right parties such as Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD), a move that has drawn criticism for interfering in democratic processes. Analysts suggest Musk’s actions are aimed at positioning himself as a “global thought leader,” using his platform and wealth to influence political discourse.

Andrew Chadwick, a professor of political communication at Loughborough University, views Musk’s political involvement as an effort to align himself with movements sharing his anti-state and anti-regulation ideologies.

Christopher Cochrane, a political science professor at the University of Toronto, argues that Musk’s ventures into politics may be driven by hubris and a belief that his success in business translates into political acumen.

“He controls an awfully large platform and has a pretty massive audience,” Cochrane said. “For Canada, things aren’t going great, so if he’s focused on promoting Pierre Poilievre, that is absolutely not the worst thing he could be doing.”

As Musk continues to expand his political footprint, his engagement in Canadian politics raises questions about the role of billionaires in shaping democratic discourse. While Musk’s actions in Canada have been relatively benign compared to his involvement in the U.S. and Europe, his influence underscores the power of social media in modern politics.
