The City of Brampton’s Black Empowerment Unit is inviting residents to celebrate Black History Month this February through a variety of events, performances, and educational programming that honor the achievements, contributions, and legacy of Black Canadians.
Throughout February, the City will host a series of engaging events, including cultural celebrations, educational workshops, and networking opportunities. From storytelling and braiding workshops to discussions with renowned figures such as Danny Glover, the programming aims to highlight the rich cultural fabric and impact of the Black community on Brampton and beyond.
Signature Events
Some key events planned for Black History Month include:
- Launch Event: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants – Black Youth Making History
- Date: February 2
- Location: The Rose Brampton
- This event features remarks from dignitaries, youth performances, and a fireside chat with actor and activist Danny Glover. Tickets are available online with options for VIP access.
- The Story of Gloria Baylis
- Date: February 7
- Location: Cyril Clark Lecture Theatre
- A dramatic play and panel discussion celebrating workplace equity pioneer Gloria Baylis.
- Canadian Black Screen Awards
- Date: February 15
- Location: Brampton City Hall Conservatory
- This event celebrates Black excellence in the arts, culture, and community service, featuring panel discussions and networking opportunities.
- Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony
- Date: February 21
- Location: Ken Whillans Square
- A symbolic event marking unity and empowerment.
- Black History Month Career Expo
- Date: February 25

The City’s Black Empowerment Unit, led by Gwyneth Chapman, is spearheading efforts to celebrate Black history while addressing systemic barriers. The Unit is also developing a Black Empowerment Action Plan, with community consultations scheduled later this year.

Educational Opportunities and Community Engagement
Residents are encouraged to participate in workshops, including a Braiding Workshop, AI bias discussions, and entrepreneurship panels. The Brampton Library will also feature book recommendations, reading challenges, and resources to learn more about Black history.
Through this extensive lineup of events, the City of Brampton continues to honor the legacy of Black Canadians while fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous community.
