City of Brampton to Celebrate Inaugural Guyanese Independence Day with Community Flag Raising and Reception

The City of Brampton is proud to announce its first official celebration of Guyanese Independence Day, recognizing the culture, history, and contributions of the Guyanese community to the city’s vibrant multicultural landscape. In partnership with the West Indian Community Brampton, the City will host a community flag raising and reception at Brampton City Hall on Monday, May 26, 2025, from 7 to 9 p.m..

Observed globally on May 26, Guyanese Independence Day commemorates the nation’s independence from British colonial rule in 1966. It stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and determination for Guyanese people around the world. The event will mark this historic occasion with cultural pride, community connection, and celebration.

This inaugural event reflects Brampton’s ongoing commitment to embracing the many cultures that shape the city’s diverse identity. Residents of all backgrounds are invited to attend this free celebration at 2 Wellington St. W., which will include the ceremonial flag raising and a community reception featuring music and light refreshments.

Advance registration is required and can be completed by May 23 at brampton.ca/guyaneseindependenceday.
