City of Brampton Celebrates National Public Works Week 2026: Rooted in Service, Powered by Community

City of Brampton is recognizing May 17 to 23, 2026, as National Public Works Week (NPWW), honouring the dedicated employees who help keep the city safe, sustainable and connected every day.

This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, highlights the important role Public Works and Engineering professionals play in supporting the daily lives of residents and maintaining critical infrastructure across the city.

To celebrate NPWW 2026, the City will host a variety of staff appreciation and community engagement activities including a flag raising ceremony, Bus Pull challenge, Truck Rodeo, school tours, fundraising barbecue in support of the United Way Greater Toronto, staff recognition initiatives and food collection efforts for Knights Table.

As part of the celebrations, Wellington Street West between Main Street South and Park Hill Court in downtown Brampton will be temporarily closed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 20 for the Bus Pull event, with traffic redirected to alternate routes.

The City’s Public Works and Engineering department is responsible for many essential municipal services including maintaining over 4,100 lane-kilometres of roads, approximately 2,000 kilometres of sidewalks, over 50,000 streetlights and more than 600 signalized intersections. The department also oversees snow clearing and winter maintenance, pothole repairs, stormwater management, signage, road safety programs, emergency response support and facility operations.

Mayor Patrick Brown said the city’s public works professionals are essential to Brampton’s future growth and success.

“The City of Brampton’s Public Works and Engineering services are essential to building a city that is safe, sustainable and ready for the future. National Public Works Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedicated professionals whose work supports our city’s growth and helps keep Brampton moving every day,” said Mayor Brown.

Paul Vicente, Regional Councillor for Wards 1 and 5 and Chair of the Public Works Section, said the annual recognition week highlights the dedication of employees who often work behind the scenes.

“Our Public Works and Engineering teams play an important role in keeping our neighbourhoods safe, reliable and well-maintained. This year’s theme, Rooted in Service, Powered by Community, reflects their commitment to residents and the positive impact their work has on our communities every day,” said Vicente.

Vicente added that many residents may not fully realize the scale and importance of the work being performed throughout the year.

“Public works professionals are often the unsung heroes of our city. Whether responding during emergencies, maintaining our roads and infrastructure, or ensuring residents receive reliable municipal services year-round, their dedication and hard work deserve recognition and appreciation from the entire community,” he said.

He further noted that Brampton’s rapid growth continues to increase the importance of reliable infrastructure and municipal operations.

“As Brampton continues to grow, the work of our Public Works and Engineering staff becomes even more critical. Their commitment, professionalism and teamwork help ensure residents can depend on safe roads, reliable services and well-maintained public spaces every single day,” Vicente added.

Peter Pilateris said National Public Works Week is also an opportunity to celebrate the professionalism and dedication of City staff.

“I am incredibly proud of our Public Works and Engineering team and the work they do every day to support our community. National Public Works Week is an opportunity to recognize their dedication, professionalism and the essential role they play in keeping Brampton running safely and efficiently,” said Pilateris.
