City of Brampton and Federal Government Celebrate Opening of Enhanced Recreation Facilities

Today, Mayor Patrick Brown, Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, and City Councillor Rod Power were joined by Members of Parliament Shafqat Ali and Ruby Sahota to announce the completion and official opening of two newly revitalized recreation facilities: the expanded and renovated Bramalea Tennis Club at Chinguacousy Park and the Century Gardens Recreation Centre.

The Bramalea Tennis Club at Chinguacousy Park now features an 80 square-metre addition designed to enhance inclusivity and accessibility. The new addition includes a lounge, kitchenette, viewing areas of the courts, rooftop viewing deck, storage room, universal change rooms with lockers, and two washrooms, one of which is barrier-free with shower stalls and a private dry area.

At the Century Gardens Recreation Centre, renovations to the pool change rooms have improved accessibility and energy efficiency through door widening, new door operators, new signage with large print, and upgrades to plumbing and lighting systems to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

“The official opening of these enhanced recreation amenities marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing accessible, sustainable, and inclusive spaces for all Brampton residents. The enhancements at Bramalea Tennis Club at Chinguacousy Park and Century Gardens Recreation Centre ensure everyone can enjoy high-quality recreational facilities and continue to lead active and healthy lifestyles. We are grateful for the support from our federal partners and look forward to seeing the positive impact these amenities will have on our community,” said Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton.

The Government of Canada, through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), is pleased to support these projects to help families enjoy their communities and live healthier lives. This funding also supports Brampton’s first Certified Commercial Kitchen, which will serve as a culinary hub and food incubator in the heart of downtown Brampton’s Innovation District, creating jobs and attracting new businesses. The new Certified Commercial Kitchen is anticipated to open in early fall 2024.

“Today, as we unveil these enhanced recreational amenities, we celebrate a pivotal moment in the Federal Government’s mission to foster accessible, sustainable, and inclusive spaces for all Brampton residents. The revitalization of the Bramalea Tennis Club and Century Gardens Recreation Centre not only ensures high-quality facilities for everyone to enjoy but also promotes active and healthy lifestyles across our community. We extend our sincere thanks to our partners for their invaluable support, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact these upgrades will have on our city. This initiative underscores the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to investing in and building a cohesive and thriving community,” said Shafqat Ali, Member of Parliament, Brampton Centre.

“These new and improved facilities are a testament to what we can achieve when all levels of government work together. By investing in our community’s recreational infrastructure, we are not only enhancing the quality of life for residents but also fostering a sense of community and well-being. I am proud to see these projects come to fruition and look forward to the continued benefits they will bring to Brampton,” said Ruby Sahota, Member of Parliament, Brampton North.

Additional local projects funded through FedDev Ontario include the Sesquicentennial Park Activity Hub, Gore Meadows Community Centre Activity Hub, and Brampton Tennis Club enhancements. All these facilities are now open for residents to enjoy.

Through Brampton’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan (PRMP), a guiding document for the delivery of parks, open space, recreation, and sport facilities over the next 15 years, the City of Brampton has been investing in building, expanding, and revitalizing local recreation facilities and parks since 2017, adding more than 250 acres of recreational parkland. These projects enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability for all residents. The City remains committed to developing high-quality recreation amenities for residents to enjoy.

“These revitalized amenities are a fantastic addition to our city’s recreational infrastructure. By improving accessibility and energy efficiency, we are creating spaces where families can bond, children can play, and our community can come together. We remain steadfast in building a Brampton that is inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable, and this is just the beginning. We are excited to continue working on projects to benefit our city for years to come,” said Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5; Chair, Community Services, City of Brampton.
