Canadian Travellers Take Note: U.K. to Strictly Enforce New ETA Requirement Starting Feb. 2026 🇬🇧

Canadian visitors heading to the United Kingdom will soon face a major change at the border: beginning February 25, 2026, travellers from Canada — along with those from 84 other visa-exempt countries — will be required to hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding a flight to the U.K.

The British government confirmed the enforcement date this week, marking the next phase of its plan to fully digitize and streamline border control. The ETA system, first introduced for Canadians in January 2025, has so far operated under a “grace period” to allow travellers time to adjust. But starting in February, airlines and carriers will be required to verify ETA approval before passengers travel, similar to how Canada handles eTAs for foreign visitors arriving here.

The new rule will apply to short-term visitors who don’t need a visa — including tourists, business travellers, and those visiting friends and family. Once approved, an ETA is valid for two years, allows multiple entries, and permits stays of up to six months per visit. Each application costs £16 (about CAD $30) and can be completed online or through the official ETA app.

Travellers with British or Irish dual citizenship are exempt, but the U.K. government strongly advises dual nationals to make sure their U.K. or Irish passports are updated and used when travelling, to prevent being denied boarding.

British Minister for Migration and Citizenship Mike Tapp said the system boosts security and improves the travel experience:
“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and offer a more seamless, contactless border experience.”

The digital authorization move is part of the U.K.’s broader modernization effort, intended to pave the way for fully automated border checks in the future. Travellers are encouraged to apply ahead of upcoming trips to avoid disruptions once enforcement begins.
