Canadian Man Faces Terrorism Charges After Violent Mosque Attack in Nairobi

A Canadian national is facing serious terrorism charges in Kenya following a shocking machete attack at a mosque in Nairobi that left several worshippers injured and a community shaken.

Authorities say the 32-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in court after being charged with nine terrorism-related offences, including assault causing actual bodily harm. The case is being investigated by Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

According to investigators, the incident took place in February when the accused allegedly entered the mosque posing as a worshipper. Once inside, he is said to have locked the main doors before launching an attack with a machete on congregants gathered for prayers.

Police confirmed that five individuals were injured in the incident and were rushed to hospital for treatment. The suspect was quickly apprehended at the scene, and the weapon used in the attack was recovered by authorities.

The accused is currently being held at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison as he awaits further court proceedings, including a pre-bail report scheduled later this month.

The incident has raised concerns both locally and internationally, particularly within faith communities, as authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attack. Kenyan officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining security in places of worship.

For many, the case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and unity in the face of violence, reinforcing the importance of protecting spaces meant for peace, reflection, and community gathering.
