India and Canada Push for Massive $50 Billion Trade Partnership as Piyush Goyal Heads to Canada

A major new chapter in India-Canada economic relations appears to be unfolding as Piyush Goyal prepares for a high-profile visit to Canada aimed at accelerating trade talks and strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations.

The Union Commerce and Industry Minister will visit Canada from May 25 to 27 as both countries intensify negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a landmark trade pact expected to reshape bilateral business, investment, and economic ties for years to come.

The visit carries significant importance as New Delhi and Ottawa have jointly set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030 — a dramatic jump from the nearly USD 8 billion in trade recorded during the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Goyal’s delegation reflects the scale and seriousness of India’s economic outreach. More than 100 senior executives from leading Indian companies are accompanying the minister, representing key sectors including energy, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, mining, telecommunications, tourism, textiles, automotive manufacturing, and capital goods.

During the visit, Goyal is expected to hold crucial discussions with Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu to review progress on CEPA negotiations and identify new opportunities for investment and commercial collaboration.

The Indian minister is also scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Foreign Minister Anita Anand as both governments work to deepen cooperation across several high-growth and strategic sectors.

Energy cooperation is expected to dominate much of the agenda. With India’s rapidly growing energy needs and Canada’s vast natural resource reserves, both countries are increasingly viewing each other as long-term strategic partners in conventional energy, clean energy transition projects, and civil nuclear cooperation.

Technology and innovation are also emerging as central pillars of the evolving relationship. Officials from both countries are expected to explore partnerships in artificial intelligence research, innovation ecosystems, advanced technologies, and international standards development.

The visit signals a continued thaw in relations between India and Canada following a period of diplomatic tension in recent years. Since mid-2025, both governments have gradually restored high-level engagement across political, trade, security, and strategic channels.

Momentum for renewed cooperation accelerated earlier this year following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to New Delhi in March, where the two countries formally launched CEPA negotiations and agreed to rebuild economic and diplomatic trust.

Earlier this month, Canadian officials also travelled to India for the second round of CEPA negotiations, held between May 4 and 7, with further discussions expected to continue during Goyal’s Canadian visit.

Beyond trade and diplomacy, both governments continue to recognize the enormous importance of the Indian diaspora in strengthening bilateral relations. Canada is home to nearly 1.8 million Indo-Canadians along with approximately one million Indian students and non-resident Indians, making the community one of the strongest cultural and economic bridges connecting the two countries.

As global supply chains shift and countries search for reliable economic partnerships in an uncertain geopolitical climate, the India-Canada trade relationship is increasingly being viewed as one of the most strategically important emerging partnerships for the decade ahead.
