Canada Post Labour Talks Heat Up as Union Prepares Major Update

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is set to break its silence this morning, holding a 10 a.m. ET press conference to update Canadians on the prolonged bargaining process with Canada Post. The union says it will address what it calls widespread misinformation about the state of negotiations, which have stretched on for more than 18 months.

Late in August, the union countered Canada Post’s latest offer with a proposal demanding higher wages while allowing flexibility for part-time workers. Canada Post has yet to formally respond but has urged the union to temper its expectations in light of what it describes as its “dire financial realities.” The Crown corporation says it is losing millions of dollars every day as uncertainty over labour talks erodes public confidence and disrupts operations.

Postal workers have banned overtime work since late May, though they have stopped short of a full strike since last year’s government intervention during the holiday season. With tensions rising and the country’s mail system under pressure, today’s update could set the tone for the next phase of this high-stakes standoff.
