Canada Explodes in Third Period to Crush Slovakia, Stay Perfect at Hockey World Championship

Canada men’s national ice hockey team delivered another powerful statement at the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship, erupting for four goals in the third period to defeat Slovakia men’s national ice hockey team 5-1 and remain unbeaten in tournament play.

After a tightly contested opening two periods in Fribourg, Canada completely took over the game in the final frame, showcasing the offensive depth and experience that has made the team one of the tournament favourites.

Young star Macklin Celebrini led the charge with a goal and an assist, capping the Canadian outburst just 9:21 into the third period. Celebrini once again demonstrated why he is considered one of hockey’s brightest rising talents, combining speed, skill and composure under pressure.

Veteran leaders Ryan O’Reilly and John Tavares also found the back of the net during the dominant third period surge, while Gabriel Vilardi added another goal to seal the victory. All four players finished with both a goal and an assist in an impressive all-around offensive performance.

Dylan Cozens had opened the scoring earlier in the first period, giving Canada an early edge before Slovakia responded in the second period through Kristian Pospisil.

For much of the game, Slovakia managed to frustrate the Canadians with disciplined defensive play and physical pressure, but Canada’s depth and relentless attack eventually overwhelmed the Slovaks in the final period.

With the victory, Canada remains undefeated through six games in preliminary round action and continues to build momentum heading into the knockout stage of the tournament.

Canada’s final preliminary round matchup will come Tuesday against Czech Republic men’s national ice hockey team in what is expected to be one of the biggest tests so far for the Canadian squad before the quarterfinals begin Thursday.

The tournament’s medal games are scheduled for next Sunday as Canada pursues another gold medal on the international stage.
