The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has officially announced the end of a salmonella outbreak linked to recalled mini pastries, which sickened 79 people across multiple provinces.
Investigations by PHAC pinpointed Sweet Cream brand mini pastries, as well as D. Effe T. brand lemon delight and tartlets with forest fruits, as the primary sources of the outbreak. The contaminated pastries resulted in 24 hospitalizations, though fortunately, no deaths occurred.
Cases were reported between late September 2024 and February 2025, peaking in December 2024. Among the affected provinces, Quebec reported the highest number with 43 cases, followed by Ontario with 26, Alberta with five, British Columbia with four, and New Brunswick with one.
Victims ranged in age from three to 88, with women accounting for nearly 60 percent of all cases.
The initial outbreak notice was issued in January, identifying pastries imported from an Italian manufacturer and distributed through bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, retirement homes, and catered events as responsible for the illnesses.
Parallel investigations are ongoing in the United States by the FDA and CDC, examining a similar outbreak linked to pastries sharing the same salmonella strain identified in Canada.
