CAF Intelligence Officer Freed After Arrest in Foreign Interference Probe

A Canadian Armed Forces intelligence officer accused of leaking sensitive information to a foreign entity has been released from custody following a hearing in Gatineau, Que. Master Warrant Officer Matthew Robar, a member of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command, was arrested last week and charged under the Foreign Interference and Security of Information Act, among other serious offences. The case remains largely secret, with few details disclosed publicly, prompting Robar’s lawyer, Rory Fowler, to criticize military police for naming his client while providing little explanation of the allegations. Fowler said Robar was previously arrested in October and released on conditions, then re-arrested on Dec. 10 and held for several days. Authorities say the arrest stems from a joint military police and RCMP investigation launched in 2024 into the unauthorized disclosure of protected information to a foreign entity. None of the allegations have been proven in court, and if the case proceeds, it would be tried by court martial within the military justice system, a process that could take months to unfold.
